Radiohead: 'We sympathise with Wall Street protestors'

Radiohead have said they sympathise with protestors who stormed Wall Street last week.

The band, who were forced to deny reports they were planning to play a gig in support of the protests last Friday (September 30), told NME that the rumour “got out of control”.

However, bassist Colin Greenwood said that they certainly “understand” the protestors’ anger at the financial system.

He commented:

Are we sympathetic to the protestors’ cause? Of course. I understand people feeling frustrated with Wall Street, anyone would be, especially as those institutions were bailed out by taxpayers’ money. I don’t think that’s a controversial thing to say.

Greenwood also hinted that the Oxford group will be playing more live shows in support of their latest album ‘The King Of Limbs’, remarking that they had been having a “brilliant time” on their recent short US tour. The jaunt saw the band play two nights at New York’s Roseland Ballroom and appear on TV show The Colbert Report.

He added: “We’ve not had much of a chance to play ‘The King Of Limbs’ live. There was the Glastonbury performance, but with our own shows we can have the full production. We’re getting together this week to talk about our plans for the rest of the year. We’re having a brilliant time, so obviously we want to keep it going.”

Greenwood also spoke about howRadiohead have been playing with a second drummer, Clive Deamer, who has played with the likes of Portishead and Robert Plant.

“It’s every bass player’s fantasy, being surrounded by all this amazing rhythm stuff. An ongoing arrangement? Yes, it’s working out great. Obviously Clive steps aside when we play the older stuff. But it’s been a lot of fun – we’ve known Clive since about 1995,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Radiohead are due to release their new remix album ‘TKOL 1234567’ – which you can hear in full below – next Monday (October 10).

Frontman Thom Yorke is due to play a DJ set at London’s Corsica Studios on the day after the release (11), alongside the likes of Jamie XX, Caribou, Lone and Illum Sphere, who have all contributed tracks to the LP.
